Small wedding venues near Louisville for under 50 guests

By the Venue Answers team · · 4 min read

Most venues near Louisville are built and priced for 125 to 300 guests. At 40 guests, a full Saturday rental can cost more per guest than dinner does. The good news is that several venues publish smaller spaces, shorter windows or weekday rates that fit a small wedding much better. Here is which ones, what they cost, and what to ask.

The problem with renting a big venue for a small group

Rental prices are mostly fixed. A $5,000 Saturday rental is $100 a guest at 50 people and $40 a guest at 125. A small wedding usually saves money by changing one of three things: the size of the space, the length of the rental, or the day of the week. The venues below publish at least one of those options.

Venues with a smaller space or shorter rental

VenueSmall optionPublished price
The Refinery (Jeffersonville, IN)The Reserve, 100 chairsSaturday $2,500, Mon to Thu $1,250, plus 7% Indiana sales tax
Historic Locust Grove (Louisville, KY)Audubon Room, Grounds or Visitors' Center packagesAudubon Room $1,000 to $1,500, Grounds $1,500 to $2,000, Visitors' Center $500
The Trestle (Depauw, IN)Mini Event, 5-hour window, no staff$500
The TrestleReclaimed Barn only, up to 100 guests$4,300
The Overlook (La Grange, KY)Rental priced by length, 4-hour minimum, indoor space seats 60Knot listing starts at $3,000
The Magnolia (Clarksville, IN)The Veranda, up to 70Not published for the Veranda alone
Pepin Mansion (New Albany, IN)Indoor parlor and ballroom ceremony, up to 100Knot listing: ceremony fee $850, reception fee $1,500
The Destination (Salem, IN)A la carte pricingWedding Spot lists a la carte from $1,263 for 50 guests

Two cautions. The Trestle's Mini Event comes with no staff, so you handle setup and cleanup yourself or hire it out. And Locust Grove's smaller packages vary in what they include; restrooms and the caterers' kitchen differ by package, so ask what comes with the one you want.

Weekday rates

A Monday to Thursday wedding is the single biggest lever for a small group, because guests who are coming anyway are often flexible. Only three venues we track publish weekday or off-day prices:

  • Highland Oaks (Palmyra, IN): Mon to Thu $2,900 in peak season and $1,900 off season. The bartender fee is $575 under 75 guests.
  • The Refinery: Refinery North or South Mon to Thu $2,750, with 4 event hours on weekdays instead of 5. The Reserve is $1,250 Mon to Thu.
  • Silo Farms (Shelbyville, KY): Sunday Only $3,000, plus the $250 cleaning fee. Its Mon to Thu rate is not published.

The other nine do not publish a weekday price. That does not mean there isn't one. Ask. Our weekday wedding savings guide covers the trade-offs, like guests taking time off and vendors charging the same rate any day.

Minimums to look for

Small weddings run into minimums that big weddings never notice. None of the venues we track publishes a food and beverage minimum, but several have other floors:

  • Hour minimums. The Overlook has a 4-hour minimum. The Refinery's weekday rental is a set 7-hour block.
  • Staffing fees that don't scale down. A bartender or security fee is often a flat amount, so it weighs more at 40 guests.
  • Caterer minimums. At venues with an approved caterer list (Cedar Bluff, Hazelnut Farm, Locust Grove), the caterer may have its own guest or dollar minimum. Ask the caterer, not just the venue.
  • Package floors. Package venues may price for a minimum headcount even if fewer people come.

Places that don't fit a small wedding well

Some venues work for 40 guests but are not built for it. Hazelnut Farm publishes a starting price of $8,500 with a large inclusions list, and Cedar Bluff's venue-only package is $4,900 for a property set up for 300. A big barn can also feel empty with a small group. If you love one of these, ask whether it offers a smaller-space or off-day rate; neither publishes one.

What to ask a venue for a wedding under 50

  • Is there a smaller room, a shorter rental, or a weekday rate?
  • Is there a minimum guest count, minimum spend or minimum number of hours?
  • Which fees are flat (bartender, security, cleaning, insurance) and which scale with guests?
  • If another event is booked the same day, will we share parking, restrooms or the entrance?
  • Can the ceremony and reception happen in the same space so we only pay for one?
  • Does your caterer, or your approved list, have a minimum?

A quick way to compare

Divide the total, not the rental, by your guest count. Rental, required fees and tax, plus your food and bar, then divide. A $500 space where you do all the work and a $2,900 weekday barn with setup and staff can end up closer than the rental prices suggest once you count rentals and labor.
