Rain plans for outdoor weddings near Louisville: what to ask the venue
By the Venue Answers team · · 2 min read
Louisville averages 8 to 13 days of rain a month from spring through fall. A rain plan is not a backup detail; for an outdoor wedding it is the venue. Here is how to tell a real rain plan from a hopeful one.
The one number that matters
Ask every outdoor venue the same question: how many guests can be seated indoors, for dinner, if it rains? Not standing. Not "the barn holds 300." Seated, with tables and a dance floor.
If that number is at least your guest count, the venue has a real rain plan. If it is lower, the rain plan is a tent or a squeeze, and you need to know which one and what it costs.
Of the twelve venues we track, only some publish an indoor seated capacity at all. Where a venue has not published it, our venue pages say "unknown" rather than guessing, and the venue search treats it as a question to ask, never as a yes.
Three kinds of rain plan
1. Everything moves inside
The ceremony and reception both have indoor space big enough for everyone. This is the safest plan. The questions are about logistics: who moves the ceremony chairs, and how long the switch takes.
2. Ceremony moves, reception was always inside
Common at barns. The ceremony site is outdoors, the reception is in the barn, and on a rainy day the ceremony happens in the barn first, then the room is flipped for dinner while guests have cocktails somewhere else. Ask where guests wait during the flip and who does the work.
3. A tent
Some venues rely on a tent for overflow or for the whole event. Ask whether the tent is included, reserved for your date or rented by you, and what it costs. Some venues charge a separate fee for third-party tents. In Indiana, a tent over 400 square feet falls under the state fire code and the local fire department must be notified, so let the venue or the rental company handle that.
Questions to ask on the tour
- How many guests fit seated indoors, with a dance floor?
- Who makes the call to move inside, and how late can we decide?
- Does venue staff flip the room, or do our vendors and family?
- Where do guests go while the room is being flipped?
- Is the indoor space heated and air conditioned?
- If the plan is a tent, is it included, and does it have sides and lighting?
- Is there a covered path from parking to the indoor space?
How to pick a month with fewer rainy days
From NOAA's 30-year averages for Louisville, May is the wettest month, with about 13 days of measurable rain and more than five inches in total. August, September and October are the driest of the warm months, at about 8 wet days each. Rain, heat and sunset by month.
Even in the driest month, the odds of some rain on a given day are about one in four. Pick the venue as if it will rain, and enjoy it if it does not.
Filter for it
On our venue search, open "More filters" and check "Everyone can be indoors if it rains." Venues that clearly meet it show as a fit, venues that have not published the number show as a question, and venues that clearly fall short drop to the bottom.
