How to get an Indiana marriage license in Harrison, Floyd or Clark County
By the Venue Answers team · · 2 min read
Getting married at a Southern Indiana venue? You need an Indiana marriage license, even if you both live in Louisville. It costs about $29 for Indiana residents and $69 for out-of-state couples in Floyd and Clark counties, there is no waiting period, and it is good for 60 days.
Step 1: Pick the right county
- At least one of you lives in Indiana: apply in the county where one of you lives. The ceremony can be anywhere in Indiana.
- Neither of you lives in Indiana: apply in the county where the ceremony will be held. A Palmyra or Corydon venue means Harrison County. A New Albany venue means Floyd County. A Jeffersonville or Clarksville venue means Clark County.
Step 2: Start online
Indiana uses a statewide online pre-application at mycourts.in.gov. You fill in your information there, then both of you finish the application in person at the clerk's office.
Step 3: Go to the clerk together
Both of you must appear in person. Bring:
- One ID that proves your date of birth: a certified birth certificate, passport or driver's license works.
- Your Social Security numbers.
- In Floyd and Clark counties, an ID that shows your current address, and your parents' full names and birthplaces.
- Cash. Most Indiana county clerks want cash for the fee.

Step 4: Time it right
The license is good for 60 days and there is no waiting period. Most couples pick it up two to four weeks before the wedding. That leaves room for a clerk closure or a missing document without cutting it close.
Step 5: Line up a qualified officiant
Indiana allows clergy of a religious organization, judges, mayors and certain clerks within their county, and a few others named in state law. There is no one-day designation for a friend. If a friend is officiating with an online ordination, call the clerk in your county before the wedding and ask whether they accept it; Indiana's statute does not address online ordination directly.
After the wedding
Your officiant completes and returns the license to the clerk. Ask your officiant how and when they file it, and order certified copies if your county does not include them. You will need a certified copy to change your name.
